The Connection Between Purpose and Wellbeing

Let’s face it - organizations continue to grapple with alarming rates of employee stress, burnout, mental and emotional distress, and chronic illness. It is imperative that forward-thinking leaders look to upstream strategies to enhance whole-person wellbeing to retain top talent.  After all, the greatest return on investment for an organization is to focus on human capital since people are the heart and soul of any successful company.  And the evidence is clear - employees with high wellbeing are more engaged, productive, and energized and directly affect a company’s bottom line.  Supporting wellbeing effectively requires a holistic approach – body, mind, and spirit.

Interestingly, research and literature are consistent: wellbeing and purpose are tightly linked.  When individuals lack a sense of meaning, they can feel stuck or lost, which can lead to disengagement, low productivity, absenteeism, loneliness, anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. Lack of purpose can often be the root cause of the emotional and behavioral health challenges many people face.

People who live with purpose and meaning have improved emotional and mental health, healthier lifestyles, stronger relationships, and fewer physical health issues.  Harnessing purpose increases wellbeing and produces positive outcomes.  Discovering purpose and meaning serves as a catalyst to empowerment, self-efficacy, and can activate behavior change. When individuals learn to prioritize their purpose, they can operate from a place of strength, grit, and resilience as they navigate life. When our world has purpose, meaning, and fulfillment, we thrive!

Personally, I have dedicated my career to health and wellbeing and am thrilled to play a role in developing and delivering an impactful program at Arctos360. In my experience, cohort experiences are powerful and lead to meaningful change, which is why we have woven this approach into our program.  Let us know if we can help you or your organization identify meaning and shared purpose at work.  We are here to help.
